Mental-health Coverage To Get A Big Boost Under Obamacare

And I might need someone to help me deal with the trauma or guilt. I think about the folks who were working at the Navy Yard or other workplaces who have to deal with the aftermath of such tragedies. And while such incidents are rare, it is likely that you are working with people who are struggling with mental illnesses and need help to handle their condition. They arent likely to go on a shooting spree, but they may drink too much, take illicit drugs or fall into a depression they cant shake. Although many large and small group insurance plans include services for some mental-health and substance-use illnesses, there are gaps in coverage. About one-third of those who are now covered in the individual market have no coverage for substance-use disorders and nearly 20 percent have no coverage for mental-health cases, including outpatient therapy visits and inpatient crisis intervention and stabilization, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Seven Politically Incorrect Health Care Ideas

Enrollment does not end until March 31. That six-month window is a one-time deal. It will be only 53 days next time around. Affordability key How many young people won’t bother with buying insurance is a guessing game, but a couple of reports give some insight. A tracking survey commissioned by The Commonwealth Fund, a nonprofit that promotes better access to health care for the vulnerable, finds that affordability not a sense of invincibility is the key reason young people aren’t enrolled in health plans. A poll commissioned by American Action Network, a conservative think tank that opposes the federal health law, determined that people between 18 and 40 who already have coverage are more likely to drop it as their premiums rise. “What that report found was young people are extremely price-sensitive,” Zirkelbach said.

Mental-health Coverage To Get A Big Boost Under Obamacare

Simon pushes to prioritize mental health funding

Under the Affordable Care Act, insurance plans offered in the new marketplaces will have to cover a core set of services called essential health benefits. Included on the list of 10 benefits are mental-health and substance-use disorder services, which include behavioral health treatment, counseling and psychotherapy. Specifically, as part of whats considered preventive services, plans will also cover alcohol-misuse screening and counseling, depression screening for adults and adolescents, domestic and interpersonal violence screening for women, and behavioral assessments for children. Here are two important points about mental-health coverage under Obamacare. First, the coverage for behavioral health services must be generally comparable with coverage for medical and surgical care. Second, plans offered in the marketplace have to cover preventive services without charging customers a co-payment or coinsurance even if you havent met your yearly deductible. But the services have to be delivered by a network provider. The Kaiser Family Foundation noted in a report released this month that benefits will be extended in many cases to cover services typically now excluded, such as mental health.

A lifelong Democrat, Otlowski served as Middlesex County freeholder for eight years and as an assemblyman for 18 years. He served as mayor of Perth Amboy from 1976-1990, resigning into his fourth term amid a recall effort led by Joseph Vas, who would replace him and is now serving a federal prison term for corruption. Governor Sheila Simon urged the state to prioritize funding for mental health services during a tour of a southern Illinois group home and a mental health crisis center. Simon is the only southern Illinois resident serving on the states Budgeting for Results Commission and chairs the Governors Rural Affairs Council, which has identified mental health access as one of its top health care concerns. Between 2009 and 2011, Illinois cut general revenue funding for mental health services by almost $114 million and was fourth in the nation for total cuts. Human service providers offer a number of valuable services from job training to emergency mental health care to people with developmental disabilities and mental illnesses, said Simon. Like the rest of us, they are doing more with less, but we need to make sure the state provides the financial support service providers need. Simon is visiting a group home and a mental health crisis center operated by The H Group. For more than 50 years the agency has provided mental health services in Franklin, Jackson and Williamson Counties.

No scientific backup required Of the more than 54,000 dietary supplement products in the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, only about a third have some level of safety and effectiveness that is supported by scientific evidence, according to a review by NMCD experts. And close to 12 percent have been linked to safety concerns or problems with product quality. Consider the path to market of Go Away Gray, a product that is claimed to “help stop your hair from turning gray.” Cathy Beggan, president of the supplement’s maker, Rise-N-Shine, based in New Jersey, said that her company has not had to provide product information to the FDA. Nor did it conduct any clinical trials of the supplement, which includes a natural enzyme called catalase, before putting it on sale.

Sleep Disorders Plague Vets With Head Trauma Or Ptsd

Sleep Disorders in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

“Sleep complaints were universal,” wrote Dr. Jacob Collen and his colleagues in their research summary. Collen’s team presented their findings this week at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians in Honolulu. The researchers studied 135 soldiers with PTSD, 116 with traumatic brain injury and 66 with both conditions. Sleep testing performed on most of the patients found obstructive sleep apnea in 56 percent of them and insomnia in 49 percent. More than two-thirds (71 percent) of the soldiers had restless nights of fragmented sleep.

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder

Now, new research is identifying more sleep problems and also calling for routing screening for primary sleep disorders. When they performed sleep studies of 343 people meeting the Fukuda definition of ME/CFS, they found that 104 – nearly a third – had a primary sleep disorder that explained their symptoms, and thus didn’t have ME/CFS at all. A 1/3 misdiagnosis rate is enough of a reason to look more closely for sleep disorders. In those who didn’t have primary sleep disorders, just under 90% met the criteria for at least one measurable sleep problem. Researchers identified four different groups based on sleep abnormalities. They were: Group 1: Slower to get to sleep, delayed Rapid Eye Movement (REM), lower percentages of stage 2 and REM sleep; Group 2: More frequent awakenings; Group 3: Longer total sleep time, less delayed REM sleep, higher percentage of REM sleep, lower percentage of wake time; Group 4: Shortest total sleep time, highest percentage of wake time after sleep onset. Researchers concluded that doctors need to routinely screen for sleep disorders when considering an ME/CFS diagnosis, and that they should use sleep studies to identify sleep problems and tailor treatments to the specific groups.
